Mother May I?

Who needs brunch when we can sleep in? My tips on how to have a luxurious yet casual holiday that celebrates moms in every way.

Brunch is great, sure, but this year I'd like to luxuriate a little longer before we all re-enter the world at large. Why would you wake up, get dolled up, and show up to a restaurant when you can roll out of bed whenever you want, munch on some goodness whipped up (or purchased) by your offspring, and lounge around in peace and quiet all day long? You can always do brunch next year!

you do you

Be selfish this year! In fact, you should be selfish every Mother's Day. Yes, of course spending time with your family is important, but I have a feeling that if you are like me, maybe you've spent a little too much time with your family this past year. So take the day for yourself. Do it and don't feel guilty about it! Personally, I plan on lounging around in bed all day while reading stacks of books. Two tomes I plan on perusing are Charlotte Moss's new Flowers and Kate Stamps' debut book, Stamps & Stamps Style & Sensibility. In Charlotte's latest edition, you would think that it is primarily what the title suggests, flowers, but it's also a wonderful commentary on life today and exudes inspiring confidence. The other book I am quite excited about because it features Casa Higgins! My long-time collaborator and dear designer Kate Stamps has just released her first book and it is deliciously decadent. Swipe over to pages 174-203 (and the back cover 😉) to see our abode at its most fashionable! An excellent pick for anyone curious about unique California homes that focus on layered and collected interiors. If you're in the Pasadena area, local favorite Vroman's has several copies on display!

take it slow

Just because you're staying inside and lounging around, doesn't mean you have to sacrifice fashion! After spending enough time luxuriating in my Heidi Carey Lily of the Valley robe, I'll be throwing on my new Zadig & Voltaire Tupel Lace Trim top, perfect for the weather this time of year, and pair it with some jeans if I'm feeling adventurous, but sweats would look cute too! Even if I stay in the house, I wouldn't mind (hint hint) throwing all my daily knickknacks into this lovely Mark Cross Grace raffia and leather box bag. If you plan on traipsing outside, I always suggest throwing on a Sarah Bray Bermuda hat to keep you covered the chicest way possible.

Spritz on a wonderful fragrance, something that brings you delight. Right now I'm trying to get my hands on a bottle of Perfumer H for Capitol, but it's always sold out - dang! In the mean time, I'm sticking with some of my tried and true scents. And this may sound silly, but everyone needs something fun to try now and then, and right now, for me, that's the U Beauty Sculpt Arm Compound. Does it work? Not really sure, but it does feel wonderful slathering on. Try it before sleeveless season starts!
